What is psoriasis?
arrow down
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which is represented by patches of abnormal skin. The affected areas of skin are typically reddish in colour, itchy, scaly and dry. Psoriasis can be localised or cover many skin areas in extreme cases.

There are five different types of psoriasis but the most common type is called plaque psoriasis which accounts for 90 per cent of cases. The areas of the body most commonly impacted by psoriasis include the back, scalp, forearms and shins.

Psoriasis is considered to be hereditary but is also impacted by environmental factors. A commonly held misconception is that psoriasis is contagious, this is proven not to be the case.

Psoriasis is not curable, however, there are a number of treatments that may help control the symptoms. One of the treatments for psoriasis is UV phototherapy.

Managed exposure to UVB light radiation has been found to have some benefits to those affected by psoriasis. However, exposure to UV radiation also comes with increased risk of skin cancer and melanoma, particularly if you are already routinely exposed to the sun.

Dermatologists agree that wearing UPF 50+ sun protective clothing and a broad brim sun hat is the best way to prevent skin cancer and melanoma.
