What is photocontact eczema?

Photocontact eczema, also known as photoaggravated and photocontact dermatitis or PCD. Photocontact eczema is a type of contact eczema.

Photocontact eczema is a chronic skin condition which is triggered by the interaction of a substance (known as a photosensitiser) on the skin and ultraviolet radiation (UV). Photosensitisers include everyday items like soaps, perfumes and even sunscreens.

UPF 50+ sun protective clothing is particularly important for those suffering with photocontact eczema as wearing it means that the skin does not need to be directly exposed to sunlight and is protected by the maximum UPF rating available. If the skin is not exposed to sunlight the photosensitiser will not be triggered.
