What is lupus?

Lupus is a disease where a person's immune system malfunctions resulting in healthy cells around the body being impaired. The immune system is made up of white blood cells which fight off disease, which means that when you get ill your white blood cells attack viruses and bad bacteria. With Lupus, the white blood cells incorrectly target healthy cells which cause a number of adverse outcomes.

Lupus manifests itself as inflammation and pain which is known to impact but not isolated to the skin, joints, heart, lungs, brain and kidneys. Symptoms include sensitivity to light, skin rashes, fatigue, fever with no cause, hair loss, mouth sores and Raynaud’s syndrome.

Many people are impacted by Lupus. It is estimated that there could be as many as 1.5 million people in the United States with the condition and likely that there are more than 5 million worldwide. The disease mainly impacts younger women, but men can be affected also. The cause of Lupus is not known but there is evidence to suggest that it is in part genetic.

Lupus can be treated, but this has been found to have limitations. Immunosuppression treatments have been found to alleviate this chronic condition by stopping white blood cells from attacking healthy cells. There is currently no cure for Lupus, but the condition can be managed with medication and lifestyle decisions.

Managing UV exposure is key for those with Lupus

Managing exposure to sunlight (UV radiation) is key for individuals who have Lupus where they suffer from skin rashes which flare up if directly exposed to the sun.

Solbari Sun Protection has developed a fabric made from organic cotton and bamboo for people specifically with sensitive skin including Lupus, Psoriasis and Eczema. Like all Solbari fabrics, our Sensitive fabric has been tested and rated UPF 50+ (maximum sun protective rating in the World) by the Australian Government.

Dermatologists globally agree that wearing a broad brim sun hat and sun protective clothing is the best way to prevent sun (UV) exposure and sunscreen (whilst effective) should be considered a last resort to protect your skin from the sun.

We have received positive feedback from customers who suffer from Lupus who have found our Sensitive fabric not only provides excellent sun protection but it also regulates skin temperature in warm, sunny conditions and limits skin irritation which may occur with other synthetic fabrics.
